September is REALTOR® Safety Month and it’s important that we take time from our busy schedules to make sure we’re keeping ourselves out of danger.  The National Association of REALTORS®, NAR, has released 56 safety tips for REALTORS®.

Each tip is certainly worth reading and understanding, but to paraphrase the importance of always making sure someone knows where you are.  I understand the sense of intimacy you may want to establish with your clients, but it’s still important to always take in consideration the possible consequences.  Simply letting your Managing Broker, coworker, or spouse know that you should be done showing a house at a specific time.  And if that person doesn’t hear from you at the time, to reach out.  Your phone more than likely has Bluetooth, so make sure you always have that enabled so that your location can be shared with contacts.

We work in a unique industry, always traveling to places you may have never been to or never will return to.  With that being said, you have to understand the potential dangers in that situation.  When you enter a building you’ve never been to, find the exits and leave them unlocked for a quick escape.  Set up your working space right next to your desired exit.

This article isn’t telling you to live in fear or leave you with paranoia while you do your job, it’s simply reminding us to keep that presence of mind so that we can be proactive and not allow ourselves to be put into danger.
