Session Speaker – Sustainability/Green Building
William M. Brown, AIA, LEED AP

Bill Brown has been practicing high-performance sustainable design since he designed and built his own passive solar home in 1985. He served on the Greening of the White House national task group as a member of the founding Board of the American Institute of Architects National Committee on the Environment. He was awarded an AIA Presidential Citation in 1993 for his pioneering work in promoting sustainable design education for architecture students and another this year for his role in the history of the green building movement. At Greenbuild, Bill was also presented with a leadership award for his part in the founding board of AIA Committee on the Environment that was instrumental in the early development of the U.S. Green Building Council. He is best known for cutting-edge green public libraries, for which his teams have won state and national awards. His Green Dream Team at BDMD Architects recently designed two net-zero-energy public libraries in Indiana. He serves as Co-Chair for the Indianapolis Green Commission, Chair of the Indiana Chapter of the US Green Building Council, Secretary of the Board of AIA Indiana and advisor to the IUPUI Center for Earth and Environmental Science. Bill was honored by the Ball State University College of Architecture and Planning Alumni Association in 2006 with an Award of Outstanding Achievement for his work to advance the science and art of sustainable design.
