REALTOR® Safety: A Managing Broker’s Responsibility

A Managing Broker has a lot of responsibilities.  As they say, most specifically Jack Nicholson’s character Frank Costello in “The Departed”, “heavy is the crown”.  Beyond the responsibilities of your agent’s behavior in a transaction, their actions in the BLC® Listing Service, a Managing Broker can also be held responsible for an agent’s safety.

In the past, it has shown that if an agent falls victim while in the field, the Managing Broker can be sued.

So instead of discussing the ugliness of potential harm coming to an agent, let’s focus on taking preventative measures.  The first thing a Managing Broker should establish for his/her office is an office safety action plan.  NAR has a few ideas:

  • Policy that requires all new and potential clients to show identification before they’re shown a property
  • Create and consistently review a customized office safety action plan
  • Regularly share NAR safety survey data and infographics with agents during sales meeting to create an open dialog about safety.

As we close September and wrap up NAR’s REALTOR® safety month, take time to implement a plan to keep yourself and your agents safe from danger.
