Sellers: Tips on How to Prepare Your Home for an Open House

Buying a home is one of the largest financial decisions a person will make in their lifetime! Thus, very few buyers will want to buy sight unseen. Holding an open house is a great way to get many potential buyers through the door to show off your home. But there is much more to it than just scheduling the open house and placing some signs in the yard. Hosting an open house and preparing your home for potential buyers will take some work! Buyers will want to envision how they will use the space, and that means sellers must stage their home so that the space is inviting, but not too lived in.

Below are 10 tips provided by REALTOR.com to make your next open house successful.

  1. Clear Clutter: Buyers get turned off when you have too many appliances on the kitchen counter, toys, or too much furniture.
  2. Hire a cleaning service: This is a big one! Buyers want to see a clean space. They will not notice if your home is spotlessly clean, but they will notice if it isn’t!
  3. Remove family photos: Buyers will want to see a neutral field where they can put down their own roots.
  4. Neutralize odors: Ask your REALTOR® or a friend for a nose check.
  5. Make repairs
  6. Buy new towels: Spruce up your kitchen and bathroom with plush linens.
  7. Set the table: Staging your dining room helps buyers envision themselves in the space.
  8. Enhance curb appeal: Trim your lawn, week your beds and prune your shrubs.
  9. Organize cabinets and drawers: Storage is a vital selling point.
  10. Leave: Buyers will feel more comfortable asking questions of your agent if you are not hovering in the background.
