Landlord Registration Proposal Vote Delayed

Last Tuesday, MIBOR government affairs staff – along with several members – testified against a proposal put before the Rules and Public Policy Committee of the Indianapolis City-County Council to institute a new landlord registry program. Due to the many issues raised, councillors voted to postpone a possible vote by the committee until August or September.

During the hearing an amendment was offered and accepted by the committee. The current proposal requires all landlords to register their contact information along with a list of all properties, pay a $5 annual fee, verify they do not have unpaid taxes or un-remediated code violations, and provide tenants with a Renters FAQ which is simply an amended name for the previous Tenant Bill of Rights.
