Charlette – A Coburn Place success story
The following excerpts have been taken from the Coburn Place Winter 2009 newsletter.
The day that Charlette unlocked the big wood door and walked into her Coburn Place apartment was the start of something extraordinary. She was turning from her past and taking the first steps toward a fresh start.
The path to self-sufficiency isn’t easy, and the women at Coburn Place work hard to achieve their goals. “You might think that the start of my ‘new beginning’ was right when I moved into Coburn Place, but it actually was after a copule of group therapy sessions and a handful of individual therapy sessions.”
During her therapy sessions, Charlette learned she needed to make some changes to benefit herself and her children. “I learned it isn’t just about horrible things happening to me, but also the choices I make.” Charlette committed herself to life-long improvement.
…Today, Charlette is a full-time student and part-time employee at IUPUI. She has a full scholarship and stipend to help with living expenses from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust’s Nina Scholars Program.
…Charlette’s new beginning means permanent life change. She will continue to learn and grow through the years. We celebrate with her now as she packs her belongings and takes her final steps toward independence, moving to a wonderful new home. |
