Domestic Violence Awareness Helps Everyone
In the last month, you may have seen WTHR Channel 13’s annual campaign against domestic violence titled “Shattering the Silence.” One of the featured families was a former resident of Coburn Place Safe Haven - a recipient of REALTOR® Foundation funding - and her three sons. The family is a true example of what success can come from such adversity. The oldest son is now a student in law school, and the mother has earned her college degree and a good job.
Domestic violence transcends all socio-economic, geographic, and racial lines. In other words, it can happen to anyone in any neighborhood. According to the Domestic Violence Network of Greater Indianapolis, at least 360 people in central Indiana have died in the last five years as a result of domestic violence. Four recent deaths in the Indianapolis area have been linked to domestic violence, and one of those was an eight year-old boy.
Because the REALTOR® Foundation cares deeply about providing victims of abuse a safe home, we have been proud to support Coburn Place Safe Haven (Indianapolis), Sheltering Wings Center for Women (Danville) and Desert Rose Foundation (Martinsville) for several years. Awareness of these facilities and the transforming work they are doing can help all of us when confronted with a friend or loved one in an abusive situation.
Why I’m a Foundation Ambassador
By Cheryl Davis, Guest Columnist
I love being involved in the Foundation because I know 100 percent of the money raised is making a difference for children every day in central Indiana.
For the last two years, I have been a Foundation Ambassador because I know how important it is to get the word out to all our members. We need more people to get involved every year to reach new goals, and I want to be a part of the big picture. I want to make this city better for my daughter and all the other children her age.
Cheryl Davis was the 2008 Affiliate of the Year, demonstrating outstanding leadership at the Western and Downtown Divisions.
Would you like to become a Foundation Ambassador? Contact Molly Hahn at 317/956-5255 and join in the next information session on Thursday, Aug. 27 at 2:30 p.m. at MIBOR.

Security Home Inspections
Security Home Inspections has once again pledged to the Foundation’s efforts to solve homelessness. Last year, the company was a $5,000 donor in the corporate category and this year, they have committed to the same. With support toward the golf outing, the Ball and the Foundation’s annual fundraising, Security Home Inspections is truly making an impact.
Patty Thornberry, Vice President of Security Home Inspections, commented, “The economy that we are all in at this time is only worsened when we allow our fellow citizens to fall and not lend assistance. We used to be able to say that we don't know anyone that is homeless. Now most of us know someone that has lost a job, a home, a family. Homelessness is on our doorstep. It's time to act.”
Thornberry became more familiar with the residents helped by the Foundation while researching for her original song “Scared, Cold and Alone” which is featured on the Foundation DVD.
Thank you to Security Home Inspections and the Thornberry family for their dedication and leadership toward the Foundation’s mission!
