Formerly Abused Women & Children Seek Permanent Housing
Recipient Spotlight: Coburn Place Safe Haven
www.coburnplace.org

Coburn front door“L” found Coburn Place through the help of an emergency shelter just a little over a year ago, having finally escaped her drug-using abuser.  Through Coburn’s counseling services, her emotional wounds have slowly started to heal. “L” has dreamed of owning her own home, but never has.

For just over 10 years, Coburn Place Safe Haven has truly been providing a safe community environment for women and children just like “L” who have left abusive situations. Each resident has a fully functional apartment with a stocked kitchen for use. With one, two and three-bedroom layouts, the apartments fit families of all sizes.

In 2006, Coburn served 54 women and 82 children. Of those women who were ready to move out of the community, 79% secured permanent housing.

Continuing to work on increasing that permanent housing percentage, Coburn Place is proud to announce they have received a three-year start-up fund from the Richard M. Fairbanks Foundation, Inc. The fund will be used to develop a model economic education curriculum, which includes training that will lead low-income, homeless, abused women to economic security and long-term stability.

Individual Development Accounts (IDA) tax credits, awarded by the Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority, are a component of the economic education curriculum. IDA accounts allow residents to have a structured way to save money for home purchase, employment training, education or small business start-up. Because the fund takes donations and matches them 3 to 1 for what each resident saves, the account grows much faster than a regular savings account.

“L” has already started saving money through this program and is encouraged by those who have already helped by buying tax credits. “I am so excited about the IDA program! With your help, I know I am changing my life for the better. Thank you, thank you!,” she said.

Tax credits must be purchased by June 30 to be part of this program. For more information on the program, contact Mary Jane Sorbera at Coburn Place; 317/923-5750 or maryjane@coburnplace.org.

Coburn Place has been a three-year recipient of REALTOR® Foundation grants with funds totaling $35,000.

Board Member Spotlight – Steve Burkhardt,
F. C. Tucker Company

Steve BurkhartMIBOR’s 2006 REALTOR®
of the Year has a special place in his heart for the mission of the REALTOR® Foundation.  When asked why he volunteers his services as a Board member for the Foundation, Steve Burkhardt said he "likes the direction of aiding people facing homelessness. They are just ordinary people down on their luck or faced with a traumatic family situation, and it feels right to help them."  In his third year as a Board member, Steve has helped raise awareness of the Board’s mission, especially in Johnson County. For 34 years, he has been a hard-working member of the real estate community and has served on the MIBOR Board as a Director and as a Finance committee and Professional Standards committee member. He has also served on the IAR Board and their Professional Standards committee. Steve is also involved in the Greenwood community with his church, the Rotary, Center Grove Little League and the Knights of Columbus.

Donor Spotlight – Mick Scheetz,
CENTURY 21 Scheetz

MickScheetzThough he is now a highly successful member of the real estate community in central Indiana, Mick Scheetz came from humble beginnings and always knew he would have to work hard. Yet, he hasn’t forgotten his roots. He gives back to the REALTOR® Foundation, as well as a few other select CENTURY 21 Scheetz charities, before encouraging approximately 150 agents in his company to do so as well.

About his decision to give, Scheetz says, “Living and working in a thriving community tends to isolate us from the problems that exist. Until our eyes are opened by organizations such as the Foundation, we don’t see the struggles that people are having. Many of us can look back on tough times in our lives and identify with them. Working in this profession has provided us with such tremendous opportunities that it’s even more reason to give back to those who are less fortunate.”

Mick has been a member of MIBOR for 36 years and owns three offices in the metro area.

Have You Seen the Foundation Video?
Since its debut on Oct. 19, the new REALTOR® Foundation video has been making the rounds. The video gives us all a true picture of how gifts to the REALTOR® Foundation are making an immediate impact. If you would like a copy and a Board member to present it at your next meeting, please contact Molly Hahn at the Foundation office. It can also be viewed at www.realtorfoundation.org.

Save Yourself a Stamp
On May 14 new postal rates go into effect.  While the rate increase of $ .02 may not seem like much, it could add up! If you’re thinking about making a donation to the REALTOR® Foundation, save yourself a stamp and click here to make your donation online. A minute of your time can make a difference to thousands of homeless Hoosiers.

In 2006, hundreds of gifts were made ‘In honor of’ or ‘In memory of’ someone. If you would like to honor a co-worker, new homeowner, or someone who has passed away, contact
Molly Hahn with the information.

Indianapolis in May: Baseball and the 500!
Did you know that the Foundation’s Web site features items for auction at least once per month? Because May is such a fun month in Indy, there’s even a bonus item coming up. Here’s what’s in store:

*Until May 17, visit www.foundationitem.com and bid for your chance to see Indians’ action up close—you and three friends can take pictures right from your box seats! Couple that with $100 to spend at Claddagh Irish Pub, and you have a great summer night.

*Paddock seats, anyone? During the week of May 18-25, two Paddock seats to the Indy 500 will be up for grabs. Where else can you get these seats for as low as $45 per ticket? Bidding starts at $90 for two tickets (face value $90 each). Watch the MLS Welcome Screen for the official posting.

All proceeds from the online Auction Item of the Month benefit the Foundation and central Indiana’s homeless community.
