REALTORS® Help Homeless with $120,000 in Grants

It was a big night for 15 organizations devoted to serving the homeless in central Indiana as an announcement was made about 2015 funding from local REALTORS®. In total, these groups received $120,000 in grants from the REALTOR® Foundation, the charitable arm of the Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of REALTORS® (MIBOR) to carry on their work in 2015.

For the last 30 years REALTORS® – and those affiliated with the real estate industry such as mortgage, title and inspection companies – have been giving to the REALTOR® Foundation which in turn distributes grants to these worthwhile groups on the front lines of assisting the homeless.

“We are excited to award grants to these very deserving organizations who are helping homeless families and individuals make the transition to safe, affordable and permanent housing solutions,” said Tom Johnson 2015 REALTOR® Foundation president.  “These organizations provide invaluable resources to the community and we are grateful to see so many in the real estate industry step up and help us reach our goal this year.”

The 15 organizations serve a wide range of clients including families, veterans, those dealing with addiction or mental illness and those impacted by domestic violence.

Established in 1984, the REALTOR® Foundation focuses on transitional and permanent supportive housing — which the foundation defines as the step between emergency shelter and homeownership. The organization partners with existing organizations that have housing as part of their mission to address homelessness throughout central Indiana. More than $1 million in grants has been awarded by the REALTOR® Foundation since 2003.

While that history is impressive, Johnson quickly points out there is more work to do, “we are proud to make a $120,000 dent in the problem, but the sad fact is that we received $400,000 in grant requests. The need is great. You can be sure the REALTOR® response will be great.”
