Keeping Your Home Safe While You Are Away

Vacation is great, but nothing ruins a well-deserved break more than a break-in or mishap while you are away. Here are a few simple steps that can help keep your home safe and your peace of mind intact.

  • Don’t advertise you are away on social media. Be honest, we’ve all done this. As tempting as it may be, it’s not smart to let all your friends and friend’s friends know the homestead is unoccupied. Post the pics when you get back.
  • Have a trusted neighbor look after the house from an exterior standpoint. Ask them to clear the driveway and sidewalk if an early spring snowstorm blows through or if a strong rain storm leaves branches all over the driveway.
  • Set a few lights on automatic timer.
  • Leave curtains exactly how you would when not travelling. Our instinct is to close up shop, but curtains pulled tightly closed are a tip off to criminals. Do make sure expensive items are kept out to plain sight through the window.
  • Stop mail and newspaper delivery or have it picked up daily by a friend or neighbor.
  • Make it appear you are home – leave a radio on; if you have a land line turn the volume down so on one outside can hear it ringing; consider leaving a car in the driveway.
  • Unplug electronics to protect against a power surge.
  • Bring that spare key inside. That fake rock is fooling exactly no one.

When keeping your home safe, it’s definitely the simple things that count. Have a good trip!
