Creating a Home Inventory 1-2-3

No one expects a disaster to hit their home. Fire, flood, theft or anything remotely like it can be overwhelming enough. Ask anyone who has been through a situation like this and they will tell you they wish they had a more complete inventory of the items in their home for insurance purposes. Spending a few hours on this activity will no doubt save you tremendous amounts of time, money and heartache.

  1. Go room by room and document the items by making a list, taking photos and video of each area. Make sure to open cupboards and drawers, don’t make the mistake of just taking photos of items in plain sight. Get close up shots of serial numbers and model numbers. HouseLogic offers a checklist for download to get you thinking about all the items you could include on your inventory. Click here.
  2. Compile receipts for the more expensive items like appliances and electronics.
  3. Scan receipts, your homeowner’s insurance policy and all photos on to a USB drive and save in another location such as a family member’s home, safe deposit box or other safe location.
